Industrial Garment Construction & Pattern Cutting |  Accredited by Swatpro

 

We are running Level 1 courses for those wanting to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in Industrial garment construction and pattern cutting and is ideal for beginners or those with domestic sewing experience.  This is a course for those that are currently unemployed or working part-time and are seeking to up-skill and find work in the clothing industry or moving onto further education.  

These courses are free for those who are a Full-time legal resident of England, aged 19 or older on 31 August 2021, able to complete the whole course, unemployed and in receipt of JSA or ESA OR in receipt of UC with take home pay of less than £345 per month OR employed or self employed with less than £18525.00 annual gross salary. The skills gained could enable you to pursue a career within the fashion and textiles industry, or move onto the next level of education.⁠

You do need to be over 19 years of age and not in education. ⁠

ENRTY REQUIREMENTS: There are no formal entry requirements but an interest in fashion and garment construction, as well as a fair knowledge of written and spoken English is needed and a commitment to achieving the qualification. A pre-enrolment interview or assessment is required for this course. Again, please be advised that these current courses are for unemployed or part-time working individuals. 

 

DURATION:  10 weeks | Mon & Tues, 9am-3.30pm

Progression Routes

The opportunity to progress from Level 1 to Level 2 Certificate in Fashion and Textiles here at Makers HQ which will prepare you for further education or an apprenticeship elsewhere.

How will I be taught and assessed?

The Course Tutors will teach and support you in a creative and friendly environment. You will be taught through practical demonstrations, research and hands on making. Assessment will be practical and feedback will be given on a regular basis.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This course is ideal for beginners, and no specific fashion skills are required to enrol onto this course, although an interest in fashion and textiles is essential.  English speaking, reading, writing at level E3 will be needed to enable you to complete the work.

What topics does the course cover?

You will be taught core essential skills relevant in the Fashion Industry such as:

Workplace Health and Safety

Measuring the standard figure

Principles of pattern cutting and marking

Fabric estimating and lay planning

Basic Block adaptation

Sewing on industrial machinery

Garment construction

THE UNITS COVERED

Pattern Construction (Industrial)

You will learn how to make patterns, manipulate patterns according to measurements, lay up and cut out and work safely within the fashion studio using various equipment. 

 

Garment Construction (Industrial)

You will learn basic technical knowledge and practical skills in garment construction and using industrial sewing machinery. Classes will include how to use interfacing, insert a zip and operate an industrial overlocker.

Once you have worked through both Level 1 & Level 2, you will have built confidence in using industrial machinery and will have constructed several different garments and multiple samples, pattern construction including fitting to different figure types.
